Turismul a fost, în timp, obiectul a numeroase studii, mulţi autori încercând să-l definească. În 1905, R. Guyer-Freuler arăta că „turismul, în sensul modern al cuvântului, este un fenomen al timpurilor noastre, bazat pe creşterea necesităţii de refacere a sănătăţii şi schimbarea mediului de viaţă, pe naşterea şi dezvoltarea sentimentului de receptivitate pentru frumuseţile naturii”. Profesorul elveţian W. Hunziker a elaborat în 1940 o definiţie a turismului, acceptată pe plan mondial: „Turismul este ansamblul de relaţii şi fenomene care rezultă din deplasarea şi sejurul persoanelor în afara domiciliului lor, atâta timp cât sejurul şi deplasarea nu sunt motivate printr-o stabilire permanentă şi o activitate lucrativă oarecare”. Dicţionarul Enciclopedic Român propune următoarea definiţie a turismului: „Activitate cu caracter recreativ sau sportiv, constând din parcurgerea, pe jos sau cu diferite mijloace de transport, a unor distanţe, pentru vizitarea regiunilor pitoreşti, a localităţilor, a obiectivelor .....
